How Can I Use My Own Cafe?

My Own Cafe's purpose is to help librarians attract teens who are unaware of the homework resources, age-specific programs and volunteer opportunities available at their library and/or neighboring community and school.

What others are doing to promote My Own Cafe.....
Silver Lake Regional High School
Halifax Public Library
Kingston Public Library
Taunton High School
DuxburyFree Library
Weymouth Public Libraries
Eastham Public Library

What could I be doing to get the word out?
  • Hold a poetry slam workshop and invite teens to post their work on My Own Cafe.
  • Ask a classroom to offer reviews of assigned readings to our bookreview section.
  • Talk to school guidance counselors and ask if they would be willing to offer community service credits to teens who volunteer to add library events to My Own Cafe.
  • Find out what local town bands/musicians would be willing to offer their music to our website for teens to download.

While My Own Cafe is providing an opportunity for kids to socialize with one another in the Southeastern region, we are learning that teens are looking for safe places to interact with teens and are seeking out opportunities to provide a service for others. But even more importantly, it reiterates the fact among participating libraries that we librarians, essentially youth advocates need to speak and meet with teens often to listen to their requests as to what services that they would like for us to provide. We may not be able to provide the services for them but by attempting to meet their needs with the resources that we have, this is the first step in creating a portal for them to visit.
